A primary school in Port Moresby recently received some much needed equipment and supplies from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ("LDS Church"). The Gerehu Primary School, established during the early 1970s in the National Capital District of the Moresby North West Electorate of Port Moresby was the recipient of these donations. The school is located on property adjacent to the chapel of the Gerehu Branch (congregation) of the LDS Church.
Despite the light morning showers, students and teachers of the Gerehu Primary School gathered and were delighted to receive the donated goods from LDS Church representatives. The students cheered as the supplies were delivered. Among the donated items were a printer and photocopier machine, repair materials for blackboards, doors, and paint. The donation of these badly-needed supplies and equipment was made possible through funds from the Area Welfare and Humanitarian Funded Projects of the LDS Church.
Shirley Tuigamala representing the local public affairs council of the LDS Church said, "Once the covering was removed from the items, I watched how the students' eyes lit up in excitement. We later learned that for almost 2 years the teachers have been writing everything on the board for the students to copy into their books. This was because their photocopier was broken and the school did not have any funds to buy a new one. So the blessing of having a new copier was the answer to their prayers."
Erick E. Lakou, the Gerehu Primary School Head Teacher (Headmaster or Principal) thanked the LDS Church for their kind assistance. Mr. Lakou expressed that the assistance from the Church will ensure that teachers can work in an environment to be able to properly prepare daily lessons for their students. This in turn will improve the students' learning skills and help prepare them to continue receiving a better education.
